Penny Lane – The Lost Video – Duo Session

A trip down Memory Penny Lane …

Wow, this video took us back! We had no idea it even existed!

Back in 2009, we visited Liverpool for the first time when we were just 15 years old. We recorded and filmed a few videos there, such as In My Life and Blackbird. There were a few others which we never quite finished – one of them was “Penny Lane”.

We always meant to record some drums and bass for the song but then other things came up and we never got around to it. But apparently, we did finish a video!

Well, it’s debatable whether or not you could call this video “finished” but it’s something … and we’d completely forgotten about it until last week when we were going through the archives for our latest Q&A about Videography.

We remember filming this 15 years ago, but we forgot that there was an edited version for the whole song! Papa Rudi must have done all that, because at that age, we weren’t much involved in the editing process yet.

So please, without further ado, we hope you enjoy a very awkward teenage version of the MonaLisa Twins from 2009!

Stay groovy,
Mona & Lisa

  1. I must say that is one of your funniest videos. When Mona models the pink cap in front of the camera the lady that walks by with the kids gives you a strange look. And towards the end of the song there is a guy across the street that appears to be either taking a photo or video of you guys. Oh, and I love that song. Peace be

  2. Ahhhhh… wearing my all time fave colours in my world…. PURPLE & FUSCHIA PINK….. looked Fab on ya …. Gotta just Embrace this …. Frikkin Fab Precious Gem this is, and no mistaking of mishearing lyrics here, even then, the clarity in pronounciation/annunciation, are music to my hearing issues, making the song even more enjoyable then The Beatles take …. Just Luv this all around, hoping more Archival Gem Nuggets will come about ….. Thankyou ever so much for this… #MLTBuzzLuvGroovified Most Indeed, I Am 🙃😉😎💜🤘👌👍💎

  3. Definitely a lovely trip down memory lane for both us and you. Just kids then but already exhibiting the silly antics that make your videos fun and entertaining. And oh yeah. The great harmonies when you sing. Glad you found this diamond in the rough and shared it with us Groovy MLT Club members.

  4. This video is amazing! I love seeing the charm and exuberant youthfulness of two young ladies fulfilling some dreams! The harmonies are just delightful, and all the cover versions from that era(In My Life, Strawberry Fields Forever) are some of my all time favorite acoustic Duo Sessions. Thanks for sharing these, Mona, Lisa, Rudi, and Michaela!Fabulous from birth…

  5. Marvellous! The star quality was already obvious. It must have been a thrill just to BE there, let alone film the song. So glad it wasn’t lost.

  6. very impressive for a pair of 15 year olds. thinking back to when i was 15 you 2 were most impressive.
one thing i like about listening to your music is how it and you have matured over the years.
i am curious how you would record that song now.

  7. I love the video. So it does not have all the background instruments like in the original song but it still sounds good and the background images of Liverpool are great.

  8. Absolutely adorable. Even your awkward teenage videos are full of talent and joy! This one will be on repeat for a while…🙂

  9. Thanks for uploading this – it was very entertaining! It does make me wonder what a remake of “Penny Lane” by 29 (or 30) year old Mona and Lisa would look like.

      1. At least twice as good! Too bad that doubling math normally doesn’t work as well between 30 and 60 – at least in my experience!

  10. I sat down to watch this this morning (a day late) while I ate my breakfast. I got so absorbed in it and enjoyed it so much that my nice hot breakfast is now stone cold. I can always reheat the food, but I can never get enough of watching and listening to Mona and Lisa. you have made my day again.🥰 Wishing all of the Wagners a most wonderful Easter!

  11. At fifteen time moves very slowly. I look back now at stages of my life that seemed to go on forever, were actually short periods of time. In time you’ll see. For me, the clock seemed to move a little quicker after thirty-five. Just look what you have accomplished in a few years time. It’s all documented here and we can’t thank you enough for sharing everything with us.

As far as your music career is concerned, you have grown musically in front of a camera. I know when I joined the club I went through the website in a chronological order. It felt like we were watching you grow up. I think that is why a lot of us have a sense of paternal pride as we watch and interact with you. That is what makes gems like this so special for us, like paintings on the fridge.

Love this stripped down version. I couldn’t help compare this to Any Other Day. Could I say Any Other Day is a mature take on Penny Lane. Imagine fifteen year old Mona playing three recorders. Your dance moves and choreography have also improved since then. 😇

We loved the “very strange” clips. You are hilarious. We couldn’t stop smiling. I muttered,‘What’s with that pink hat.” Marlo snapped back,”Stop overthinking it. They probably just realized how adorable it looked. They are such nice girls.” I gotta figure out the significance of that hat. Anyone? Bueller?

    Friday posts rock!

    Love,

    Marlo & JP

I bet you when you were babies, you cried in perfect harmony?
2:00 am sound of babies crying
Uh-oh. The twins are awake. They must be hungry. I’ll get their bottles.
Okay, but take your time. Their cries are so beautiful.

    1. I think you’re onto something with that song comparison, JP. In retrospect, when I first heard Any Other Day I believe my brain filed it in the same neural groove as Penny Lane. There seems to be a subtle and intriguing similarity in the structures of the songs that I can’t quite point to directly.

    2. That is such a sweet comment, thank you JP and Marlo ♥ We cannot believe this was already 15 years ago. Even to us, time already moves incredibly fast yet at the same time 15-year-old Mona and Lisa seem like a different species to current Mona and Lisa.
      And Marlo was
right, there was no particular significance to the pink hat as far as I
remember. It looked silly and we liked that, I guess 😉

  12. I keep posting “Wow”to your videos. I can’t believe you were only 15 when you sang this and made the video. I see Mona was a comedian even then. Please find more

  13. This was always a wonderful song, typical Beatles talking about life and full of interesting details. Your video is great and guitar playing already excellent. Nothing to change here. An out and about Duo Session. Thank you for presenting the video.

  14. Well, that was lovely! What a cute video! Loved it! Mark another one for misheard lyrics: until 2 minutes ago I thought it was “and the fireman wears a mac in the pouring rain” 🙄

  15. Penny Lane…. Probably one of the most famous areas in the world. It looks so normal….. the people just like neighborhood people! Even those two crazy young ladies, running around, looks just like what some of the kids in the neighborhood would be doing! The Fab four were just normal kids. That’s hard to believe! 60 yrs… it probably hasn’t changed much! Great video…. People will look back 60 years from now…. And say wow the Mona Lisa twins were just normal kids. Of course we know better! 🤨🤓🎶

  16. I’m not sure why you waited to finish this video – it’s great!

“Penny Lane” is a strange song to me, “very strange”, but like all the Beatles songs, it works, as does your “very strange” video. I believe that the Lennon–McCartney song writing team has to be viewed as one of the best ever, and even at the age of 15, I think that you Twins are one of the best ever to cover those songs.

  17. One of the things I like about these touristy videos is that you can stop and start them at will, just to catch a bit of detail that otherwise would go by so quickly. I’ve done that quite often with the Twins tour of Hamburg, for example. On this one, at 2:10 there is a marquee above a door that reads Sgt. Peppers. What’s that about, and does it have historical significance? I suppose it could just be a souvenir shop. Can someone go and do a check for me? Thanks.

    1. Len,

I just googled “Is there a Sgt. Peppers souvenir shop in Liverpool?” I found out that there’s a “happening bar with a high-tech stage setup and music-themed cocktails in a funky brick-lined space.” Somewhere I read that it’s in the “Cavern Walks,” where the updated Cavern Club now sits. But the sign in our Twin’s video looks different than the sign on the bar that I googled. So either they have a new sign there now, or maybe there’s another place with that sign.

      CHEERS! — Bud

      1. Thanks for the research Bud. Somehow I was thinking someone could just slip down the street, or go down on the local bus and check it out. I’m still so twentieth century!

    2. Len,

I actually Bi-located to Liverpool with the help of a little green Alien, just to make sure that the information I googled was accurate!! I don’t always trust googled info!…….
Er, ah, maybe it was all a dream….I’m not sure?!?!

      — Bud (I think!)

  18. Your Penny Lane video is wonderful and to think you were only 15 makes the video that much more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.

  19. You made a great video for my listening pleasure. Themed partially like the Beatles Penny Lane video, which I watched on TV when it was first shown on Ed Sullivan’s show. I was only 9 but had watched their first appearance on the same show when I was 5. I am now enjoying the originals in Dolby Atmos and. It is awesome. Love you ladies, take care.

  20. I LOVE it! I hope there are more old videos hiding in the archives! Ahhh to be so young again! You’re so lucky to be living in the Beatles old digs. Must be a TON of fun. Thanks for this cute and awesome video!

  21. I am always overjoyed to see a new video. Thank you for sharing this gem from when you were 15. It really does show your personalities in this video. I loved it. You two are so loved !!!

  22. That was absolutely adorable! Your first Duo session? Even at just fifteen years old you both were so talented. But, Mona, I like the blonde hair better than the pink… although, the pink did match your pants. 😊 You both were just so fun to watch!! ❤️💛

  23. This is one of the most fantastic things I’ve ever seen. The fact that they would even consider sharing this is incredible, I’m so grateful! Like Jeff said, this video is so full of personality it just overflows. I really like how the differences in their two personalities shine through here, although I suppose it helps to know them pretty well; I doubt anyone who didn’t would appreciate that so much. I was laughing out loud, literally, all the way though it. Mona really plucks my heart strings!

  24. Howdy,
Wow, I really loved that video. You ladies did a terrific job (even at 15). I enjoyed it more than the Beatles singing it. And whoever filmed it is a master craftsman (or woman). Was it Rudi or maybe Michaela?
Thank you for brightening up my day, as usual.
    Have a terrific weekend.
    Bobby S. 😎🎵❤️🎵❤️🧛‍♂️

    1. Thank you Bobby!!! And yes, Dad was doing all the filming back then but Michaela helped us a lot with everything else on this trip/shoot. ♥

  25. This was groovy fun! and I understood words in the lyrics I never have before.
I hope there are other gems hiding in the archives.

  26. I quite enjoyed this “bare bones” version of the song. Something to be said for simplicity! A very sing-a-long version. The video was fun too. I agree with a few others that you appear to haven’t changed that much. Hopefully a few other hidden gems will be unearthed!

  27. Mona and Lisa,

Did your friend Mike McCartney tell you he was married at St Barnabas church which features in your Penny Lane video? If you google it you will see photos of Paul at the wedding. Many year before Paul had been a choirboy at this same church.

For 11 years I caught the bus to Penny Lane on the way to school – and yes, the bus really did have Penny Lane on the front as its destination 🙂

    1. Haha no, Mike never mentioned it in person but we’ve heard about that and have seen the photos! Every time we drive past Penny Lane on our way somewhere in Liverpool it brings a smile to our faces. Nice that you could have that for 11 years! 😉

      1. Mona, I’d like to share a Liverpool joke with you 🙂

The bus I caught home from Penny Lane everyday had ‘Pier Head’ as its destination, as do many buses in Liverpool. Back then the Pier Head bus station was right by the River Mersey near where the large stature of the Beatles is now. So the joke goes …

Passenger: “Does this bus stop as the Pier Head?”.

Bus driver: “Well, if it doesn’t we are all going to get very wet.”.:D 😀

      2. Ha – Ha – Ha! Good one Richard! I’m glad I wasn’t on that particular bus!
        That’s kind of “Cooky!”

        — Bud

      3. ha ha typo correction:

Passenger: “Does this bus stop at the Pier Head?”.

Bus driver: “Well, if it doesn’t we are all going to get very wet 🙂

      1. Yes, I knew this. Roger McGough (on the left above) drove me home from school a few times, as his step-son Nathan was in my class and they lived my way 🙂 Nathan went of to manage the Happy Mondays.

In the sixties everyone living in Liverpool knew someone who was something to do with the Beatles 🙂

      2. And, of course, the other member of The Scaffold was the comedic John Gorman, who starred in that fabulous Saturday morning kids TV show Tiswas when I was young, along with Chris Tarrant, Lenny Henry, Sally James and the legendary (in my mind!) Bob Carolgees with Spit the Dog. Not forgetting the phantom flan flinger, of course.

I suppose that in the sixties, it wasn’t just the Beatles who were very popular Liverpudlians in the UK. Cilla Black and various other groups also hailed from there, as did comedians like Jimmy Tarbuck and Ken Dodd, and, of course, the Reds from Anfield won the First Division title a couple of times in the mid-sixties. So most Liverpudlians probably had some connection to at least one of them.

  28. Awkward? Here’s awkward: I remember signing up for the MLT Club, and then I blinked a couple of times and it’s coming up on five years, and you did this video TEN years before I signed up! But one thing stands out, and that’s the undecipherable, indescribable, spine-tingling sound of your two voices in harmony. It’s a bit different now but the essence is unchanged, unmistakable, and now we know, timeless. Whatever force there is out there in the universe has chosen to allow us to experience it through you, and I’m forever grateful. Although this does mean you can never stop, you know…universe and all that.

  29. Love it! I don’t see anything awkward about it, just two of my favorite musicians in the whole word singing, playing and having a great time!

  30. Be sure to save the video for your kids to laugh at some day.
Please don’t ever touch the music. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE

    1. It’s already been studioed to death. (Like right away).
Never doubt the power of the Acoustik Meisteren.

  31. I always loved your version of Penny Lane, has become my go to version, it is so sweet, tender, beautiful and all your own, and now there is a video to go along with it. And wow what a beautifully done video, what a gem it is now, love the video, it is so fun, colourful, and charming. It not only serves as a wonderful and fun video for the song, it showcases what Penny Lane is like that I’ve never experienced before. Absolutely love this, and I don’t think the video is unfinished, it is superb, perfect with the song! Love all the little fun antics that fit right in with the lyrics like Mona with the hat and miming with the hat strings, or Lisa rowing along the street with the guitar, or Lisa’s expression as Mona has a crazy fit in the back. You’re both so adorable in it too! Thank you so much for doing this. 🎶 💕

    1. Jung,

I couldn’t have said it any better! I’ll go with what YOU said! I really enjoyed this, and I was there with my family the year before this video was made. We walked along the street in the same places. It’s a lovely, quaint neighborhood!

CHEERS to MONA & LISA (LISA & MONA!) — Bud

      1. Hi Bud
Yeah Penny Lane looks like a lovely quaint neighbourhood indeed! It’s all so charming and full of character.

      1. Hi Bill! MLT are second to none indeed. Watching the video I wish I could be in Penny Lane, get a hair cut at the barber shop, have lunch at the Fish and Chips place, and then hang out under the blue suburban skies of Penny Lane waiting for Mona and Lisa to come by.

      2. Jung that would be so wonderful to just hang out and run into Mona and Lisa and just chat and have a wonderful time just hanging out. I know that is a dream but why not? You never know, and to add to this would it be great if all of us in the MLT club just hang out all together?

  32. That’s really put the Friday smile on my face. That’s lovely just the way it is, or you could add bass and drums too.

Near the end there’s a moment where you both jump up with your hands in the air.in front of a building that says Sgt. Peppers on it. I’ve seen a still shot of that before. Somewhere(?)

    Thanks for this.

  33. Such a treat to see this video! And so very glad you got a small “nudge” to resurrect it haha! It honestly does make my heart melt when I see videos and pictures of the two of you in your youth but still playing and singing, you were truly put on this Earth to make music and entertain the world. Thank you for being who you are, much love to all of you always!
I hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend.

  34. PERSONALITY! That’s the first thing that comes to mind upon seeing this formerly lost gem! It combines many of the qualities of some of my favorite MLT Club videos! It’s an authentic Duo Session, it gives us a glimpse into the early performing days of our favorite twins, it showcases the warmth and love evident in this family, and it lets us see another awesome location shoot featuring iconic backdrops. I love the simple but appropriate and wonderfully performed musicianship and especially the generous dose of loveable teenage goofiness Mona and Lisa still retain a good share of to this day! Good Friday is especially well-named this year! HAPPY EASTER, all!

  35. Loved it!! Love seeing these early videos, getting to watch your amazing growth as artists.I would love(as I;m sure many other MLT Clubbers would) to see more of these early ones. I know you both probably cringe a little when you come across them. But we absolutely love seeing our girls, and delight in your youthful enthusiasm, and playfulness in them. As always,Thanks for putting a smile on my face, and getting the weekend off to a great start.

    LOVE & HUGS💛💓
    \
    Tom

  36. Very nice, I’m kind of glad there is no drums and bass. A beautiful melody like this only needs the voices and acoustic guitars, seems more real this way. I think the Beatles sometimes over did it with all the instruments, just my opinion, apparently some people liked it, Lol. Loved the video, makes my heart smile seeing your younger selves. Love Mona’s hairdo. Have a happy Easter weekend and thanks for posting this one.

  37. I love this so much! You two sing Beatles songs better than the Beatles!

    Love to all,
Happy Easter to you and all of the MLT club members.

  38. This was really adorable, It was honest and straight, thank You for this memory.Incredible the talent You had on this young age!! And you’ve grown so much.I listen to your songs every day and everytime i hear someting new and wonderfull!!

  39. Even then you had such beautiful voices that harmonize so well together. Thanks for sharing this!

  40. A truly defining #MLTBuzzLuvGroovified Gem this is, even at 15, the undeniable essence was already present and emanating , may I also say that you were wearing my 2 ultimate colours , Purple, first and foremost, secondly the Fuschia Pink in the pants/shoes, and you rocked it all fab and more than a Penny Lane’s Worth… Thankyou for sharing this treasure gem, great way to start off an Easter Wknd .. Easter Egg indeed 😊😉🙃🤩😎💜💯💗🤘👌👍👏🐇🐰🐣

  41. That was so precious and cute. I bet it brought back some fun memories. Thank you for a another wonderful start to the weekend. Your silliness was a cuteness overload! lol Hope you and yours have as much fun this weekend as it looks you had in filming this. All the best… 🙂

  42. There’s nothing awkward about this video at all. It’s beautiful and funny. Your voices are still a bit younger, but your talent is already obvious.
Not many 15-year-old girls sing Beatles songs in the street these days. Luckily you did… in Penny Lane. 🙂

  43. So enchanting!
I just loved this! All that enthusiasm brought by youth. The humorous bits were perfect. You two are more entertaining than you realize, the full experience is more than singing and playing, your acting is natural and delightful. Some of your best videos include your acting, please incorporate more of it.
And if you have any more gems stashed away, even just a few seconds of anything, please share.
Happy Easter to the Wagner’s! Much love and admiration and all the groovy I can send you…

  44. This is fantastic! I’m sure I’m not the only one thinking along these lines, but why not add a bass and drums now, splice in the piccolo trumpet solo played on the uke (accompanied by additional video footage or a slideshow of still photos), and post the finished video on YouTube?

    1. Yes! I’m with you, David. Just add them to the existing vocal and guitar track. It would not detract from the original, but would enhance it and improve the success of the YouTube presentation. I love this so much!

      1. David & Stephen,

It could be “Penny Lane” Parts One and Two!” But, Mona & Lisa probably have multiple projects going on now with new songs, & they may not have time to go back and re-do this. WE’LL SEE, but good idea anyway! At any rate, I loved this old video, and it made me think about my last trip to Liverpool in 2008!

        — Bud

  45. I thought it was a very good video. I liked the Beatle type silliness you included. For 15 you guys did one heck of a good job!

  46. Mona and Lisa! Thank you so much for revisiting this video! At 15 you both had the vison and love for your craft. Love the funny parts of this video and the sights that I know I may never see in my lifetime. I know I say this all the time but you both have such a lovely blend of your beautiful voices it is heaven to me. So smooth and lovely. Thank you, Pa Rudi, for putting this together. This is Easter weekend, and this was a perfect Easter present to all of us seeing you both starting your journey. Me and Maddie hope you all have a wonderful Easter and take time to enjoy time with loved ones! No money can match that. Hugs and love from me and Maddie Isenberg Huge Fans from Pittsburgh PA USA …..LOVE YOU ALL

  47. I think it’s really cute and fun, you must have had a good day out filming it. You can tell greatness will come in later years but I love seeing young Mona and Lisa in action!

  48. I think you found this video in response to my question from last weeks Q&A. I love the video and music. The 12 String guitar sounded really good and I was surprised that Mona 👱‍♀️ was singing the high part and Lisa 👩‍🦰 singing the low part. I am really glad you chose to share this video! Bring us more of these if you have them, Please!!!

  49. Thank you for finding and sharing this treasure from the past. Musically sweet and visually delightful! Your endearing personalities and sense of fun are captivating and brought me some (much needed) light-hearted joy this morning. You are not at all awkward – just younger versions of your own lovable selves!

  50. Hello Ladies,
Baby Mona And Lisa return to yesteryear. You can see how much has changed In 15 years. I always enjoy a good MonaLisa Twins video. No matter the year. I enjoyed this very much, and I can’t help but wonder what else is hiding in the archives. The world may never know. Mona, I loved your PINK HAIR! Perfect for Easter weekend. Thanks again Ladies.
    Best Rick Ross

      1. There’s really no need to thank me, Lisa. It was a pleasure, as it always is, watching any of your videos. Stay groovy, girls.

BTW, thank you for clearing up for me that the lyrics go: “…and the banker never wears a mac”. In my head, for some reason, the lyrics were always “…and the banker man wears a mac”, which makes absolutely no sense whatsover when you think that this is followed by “Very strange”, which I never really though about before!!

      2. I always thought it was “the banker man wears a mask”, because I’ve never heard of a mac. (I guess it’s some kind of a rain jacket?) But at least it is indeed very strange to wear a mask in the rain.

      3. Yes, David, a mac (short for mackintosh) is a raincoat in the UK.

It’s funny how we sometimes mishear lyrics. I know that I’ve done it loads of times and one instance that I can immediately think of is Van Halen’s Jump where I thought that the lyrics “might as well jump” were actually “Maxwell, jump”!!

      4. Lisa & Mona,

Everyone always says that you’re both Cute, Adorable, Sweet, Delightful, Funny, & on & on. Yeah, yeah yeah, that is true! “We love you yeah-yeah-yeah!”

But PERSONALLY, I think you’re both Tough–looking, yet Glamorous, Talented & Edgy, HOT, yet Cool at the same time, very Musical, yet thoroughly Practiced & Prepared, and “Looking for Trouble,” but somehow not finding it, yet COMING OUT ON TOP, EVERY TIME!

I’m just trying to say, that underneath all that “Cuteness” lies two very strong, hard-working, groovy–tough, Musical Geniuses in disguise, that are “One -of -Kind in the World of Music!” I just wanted to clear that up! SO THERE!!
        Now LIVE with it!

And OK, you’re Cute too! — Bud

      5. Agreed. They’re pros. They’ve been at this for a while. They have toughness to them, and they’ve seen plenty.

But while they have that experience, they also have all that talent, with music of course, but also people skills, acting, presence, humor, creativity, charm, and they clean up nice – they have it all. And they keep it real.

It’s amazing the power they have, because a lot of what I mentioned above, I felt the first time I saw them, when I watched Drive My Car 8 or 10 times in a row. They were younger then, but even in this vid, at 15, you can see a lot of this.

      6. Right on Chris!

You just offered another dimension to what I just said, very good! They have a lot of different very well-honed skills that “Come Together” so naturally, and they make it look so easy! And taken alone, each skill is not so simple to accomplish! It should take a lot of work, & it seems that they were born with these innate abilities. Then they also seem so normal & lovable yet goofy at the same time. It’s quite a combination!

And I often worry about them, hoping that they can continue as they are indefinitely, yet finding happiness in life, & in what they do. Lucky for people like us that they didn’t wind up in some other profession as unknowns!

And if they had grown up in different families and not as twins, I wonder how they would have developed. They bounce ideas off each other all the time, & work together so well! Ahhh, the MLT’s! A sweet mystery of life!

(That’s all I got right now!) — Bud
