Outside of Lisa on playing Cello, etc .. before I’m finally sleepy enough ready for bedtime, ( just after 3 AM )…

I decided to go ahead and start this topic thread since Bud & others have already posted some stuff and clearly this deserves its own separate topic thread ….

Okay, who are your fave Fiddlers/Violinists …. ??

In Fiddling, hands down it’s April Verch for me, followed by Ashley McIsac, Natalie McMaster , Charlie Daniel’s, while in Violinists, I’m only familiar a little with Itzhak Perlman stuff ( yes, I’m not fully clueless about Classical Music as I’m hoping no one thought I am/was, it’s just not my kinda cup of musical genre cup of tea 😉 ) There’s probably a few others I’ve heard of but the names aren’t coming to mind for both Fiddlers/Violinists…. These are my choices ….

Feel free to share your faves here … 🎻

Now, I’m off to get my Nighttime Zzzs …Finally…Menopausal Insomnia Bouts are no fun, as I’m not normally a Night Owl… my bedtime is usually 11PM- 1AM , anything past 1 AM buggers me up …. and Daylight Saving Time furthers throws me off in/with my Sleep Pattern ….

The violinist that most immediately comes to mind for me is Stephane Grappelli. (b. 1908 & d. 1997). Grapelli first attained prominence pre WW 2, playing with Django Reinhardt in the Hot club Of France. After that, you would be hard pressed to say who he did not play with in the jazz world. He made literally hundreds of recordings with people like pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarists Barney Kessel and Joe Pass, vocalist Ella Fittzgerald. drummer Kenny Clarke, and bassist Niels-Henning Orsted-Pedersen. The list goes on and on. I have a number of favourite vinyls with Grappelli either leading or guesting. There are likewise many examples on YouTube

Jacki, Len, Chris, Jung & Everyone,

Thanks so much Jacki for putting up this new category, that we SHOULD have started about 5 Violinists ago!

Len, funny you should mention Stephane Grapelli; I did see him live in NYC in the mid-’70’s when I was living there. He was in his mid to late ’60’s then, & still going strong! Here’s a video of him playing in France. I’m not sure if it’s from French TV, or a movie. There’s a Guitar solo also!

Thanks for mentioning Grappelli, Len and thanks for posting that clip, Bud – very nice. I’m not a big fan of classical music but I love hearing the violin in other music that I enjoy. Whenever Stephane Grappelli’s name comes up, I always think immediately of Yehudi Menuhin as they sometimes used to play together and here are a couple of clips of exactly that:

    Hi Jacki

Great idea, thanks for creating this post. I guess we went off on a bit of a long tangent on the 20 Greatest Guitarists thread with all those violinists.

I was just about to post Lisa playing the giant fiddle (AKA Cello), my favourite, but saw “outside of Lisa on playing cello”. 🙁

I have Bach’s 3 Sonatas and 3 Partitas for Solo Violin played by Arthur Grumiaux, and really love the way he plays. In this last movement of Bach’s Partita No 1, it really sounds like 2 violins, but it’s actually solo violin. This movement is called “double” just because of that. I find it so stirring and beautiful. I couldn’t find a live performance of it, so it’s just the track.

I posted this here before a while back. I like this modern string quartet with different violinists doing some Beatles and other modern music. My fave of theirs is this one.

I like Esther Abrami’s interpretation of one of Beethoven’s most beautiful movements. He was writing love songs/music over 200 years ago.
