My daughter introduced me to this song when it was new and I kinda liked it, despite its core message that we Gen X’ers aren’t as young as we used to be!

Since Bud posted a version of “Over the Rainbow” on this thread yesterday, now seems to be an appropriate time to mention a singer with a powerful soprano voice who had posthumous success, at least in the UK, with that song.

I’m talking of the delightful American singer Eva Cassidy, who passed away in 1996 and was virtually unknown outside her native Washington, D.C. at the time of her premature death from cancer. However, two years after her passing, that song and her version of “Fields of Gold” were played on British radio by the DJs Mike Harding and (the one and only) Sir Terry Wogan, with the response from the public resulting in her album “Songbird” being re-released and topping the albums charts, with both singles becoming hits in the UK. “Over the Rainbow” charted in 1999, but her subequent singles all charted in the UK this century.

She didn’t achieve singles success across the water, but three of her albums did achieve minor chart success in the States.

The first video below is her version of “Fields of Gold” and the second one is a “duet” with Katie Melua (featured earlier on this thread) of “Wonderful World” which topped the UK charts in 2007:

      Paul,

I had not heard of Eva Cassidy before, but she did have a very nice voice! I really like her singing! I looked her up on Wiki, and it’s so terribly sad that she died so young from melanoma at age 33! No one said that life is fair, but to leave so soon, especially with such success ahead of her! That’s really tragic! John Lennon is another one, but it’s even worse that his life was taken away so violently & senselessly! It makes me feel lucky to have made it this far!

Thanks for your videos, they are much appreciated! — Bud

Bud, I’m glad that you’re still enjoying the videos. Yes, it’s always very sad when someone dies at such an early age. I was just thinking that Karen Carpenter was only about a month away from turning 33 when she passed away and, of course, John Lennon’s death was, as you say, just senseless and it made me (and many others) very angry at the time.

Anyway, here are a couple of other Eva Cassidy videos that I did not post in my last post. Firstly, her performance of “Over The Rainbow” at the Blues Alley nightclub in Washington D.C. and secondly her lovely rendition of “Songbird”, penned by the late Christine McVie.

She also does a nice version of “Imagine” and “Danny Boy”.
