Club 27 – New Video & Birthday Sale!

Gather round, you girls and boys …

Today we are celebrating our 27th birthday so we simply had to post this song – first released on our album ORANGE.

It’s called Club 27 and pays homage to all the wonderful talent we have lost at the age of 27, an eerily common age for famous musicians to pass away at. This phenomenon has led to the creation of the 27 Club, an unofficial list that includes the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse … the list goes on.

We know the timing of this release might appear a bit morbid, but we’ve always had a slightly macabre sense of humour. 😉

Now, we don’t have the slightest of intentions of joining that club this year, so rest assured this isn’t an announcement! We’ll keep eating our vegetables and putting on our seatbelts … We’ve got a new album to finish anyway!

The video was created and animated by the two of us. We enjoyed playing around with it and using some new animation effects that we hadn’t explored previously. We know it’s “just” a lyric video but again … we’ve got a new album to finish! 🙂

Here is to all the talent lost too soon and the magic they left behind,

Mona & Lisa

  1. Hi there ladies! My first engagement in this industry was with Gary Numan when he pioneered his own web presence in the early 1990s and my company provided the tech and hosting. Gary’s was a family business as well – and Gary was and remains a complete control freak – in a good way. His brand and image has a been solid foundation for a 43 year career. The original web presence was a pretty straightforward online shop selling swag and tickets – online video was not really up to muster and most users didn’t have enough bandwidth. He’s come a long way since…

I still do not understand the appeal of “modern” chart material; garage, grime, rap etc strikes me as lazy and mostly just “formulaic” noise. Is it because there is just not enough to be made from talented musicians covering the best pop classics from the 70s-90s to put enough cocaine up the noses of all the A&R people involved in the labelled music industry?

And artists like Beyonce seem mostly abouts pouting, posing and frilly knickers. Yes, she can sing a bit, but the songs all sound the same and have little or no subtlety. Money spent on snazzy videos cannot substitute real talent in the long run.

Meanwhile we have been reminded of how real popular music can sound by ABBA, and there is a chance coming for a big 70s revival lead by ABBA – and an 18 year old girl from Agnetha’s home town who is currently causing a stir with her joyous cover of Abba’s “don’t shut me down”. Serch for Emilia Abba and she’s right on top. Most of the fans admit to being over 60 (anad loving it)! SO it’s going to be a very odd – but a golden opportunity to sell proper pop music once again.

The way the really talented musicians (like you) are rewarded needs to be rethought – in a fair world you would be earning £1m pa from your talent and hard work – so I am working on some ideas to try and fix this …

One word of advice – you really should try and answer some of the fan comments here and on the videos – maybe get a “ghost” writer to write replies for you?

  2. Just commenting on the incredible bass on all the tunes. The Horner has just the right sound and precision. The whole family’s well taught. Any information on “dad’s” background? If I was told Sir Paul was backing the band I’d almost believe it.

  3. I think a few of your lyrics were lost on some of your fans based on their comments, however they were not lost on me. Titles, and lines from THEIR songs like Jimi’s and Jim’s made yours so much more poignant. Love it! Keep it up. JB

  4. Hello Mona & Lisa,

once upon a time I joined the Club 27, too. Nowadays I join the CLUB 63 – as a pensioneer.

    I like your music including “When I’ m 64!”

    1. Nah, fortunately, you never joined the “Club 27”. To join that, you would have needed to die at the age of 27…LOL
I’m sure you won’t join any stinkin’ “Club 63” either, and you will celebrate you next Bday with MLT’s cover of “When I’m Sixty Four” 😉

  5. I didn’t get in on time for the actual Birthday but I am in now. So Happy Birthday Girls, you’re both so very talented and make beautiful music even more beautiful.

  6. Happy Birthday Twins! I myself am going to be the Grandfather of Twin Girls coming anytime now. My daughter is having her first children. Twin Girls and I can’t wait!

    1. Thanks and congrats on becoming a Grandfather! We hope everything will go smoothly and that the twins will be happy and healthy. What an exciting time for you and your family!

      1. Thank you! The girls should be arriving any day now. My daughter also has 2 beautiful and playful Huskies. She and her husband will have their hands full but at least my wife and I are only 2.5 miles away from them. I’m sure we will be there a lot!

  7. Happy birthday from Jakarta.

  8. Happy Birthday Ladies and I LOVE Club 27… What a great anthem to the stars that left us early… Much Love. Peace

  9. Happy Birthday lovely Sweethearts 🙂 🙂 May Love, Joy, and Happiness always fill your hearts with the best God has to offer you both and they that are closest to you. The Angels smile at you. Peace to you and all. 27 is the best time in life. so sweet it is. make the best of it.

  10. Happy Birthday, Mona & Lisa, love all your music & videos. Keep it coming & I’ll keep buying everything you release. Best Wishes to all who work with you, you’re doing a great job.

  11. Happy Birthday to two beautiful and talented musicians. I love your music and your videos! Best wishes to you and all of those who work with you to produce the musical magic.

  12. Always been one of my favourite MLT songs. Very best birthday wishes, ladies, and many more to come. Rock On!!

  13. So, Gemini? How appropriate!

Nothing morbid about this song, just a celebration of those who left us far too soon. Stick around, girls, there’s a lot of us out here who love you. The text for the day is “We’re all on one road, we’re only Passing Through.” Maybe you should concentrate on writing because this is a great song but if you continue to cover others, perhaps it’s time to move on from Beatles to songs for grown-ups. Joni, Cohen, Dylan, for example. Many happy returns and keep on making great music. xx

  14. Happy Birthday!!! Love this song, never quite got all the lyrics….very clever!! Great job ladies!!!

  15. you guys are fantastic im an old Rock musician and producer and i say youve hit the mark on the retro sound… also love your originals

  16. Happy Birthday to 2 very talented and lovely ladies. This song brings back the great memories of listening to their music and the sad news of their passing.

  17. To The Twins

Have a Very Happy Birthday and many more and since it’s your 27th I hope to see you girls around for a long time
That’s one club you don’t want to be in

    Bill

  18. Dear Mona and Lisa,
Have a wonderful birthday and a prosperous year. So great to see you both grow into such beautiful, successful young women.

    David

  19. Happy birthday. A good age to be. But it goes by fast. I’ll be 71 Aug 2rd. I still think of my self as a twenty something until I pass my reflection. I’ve introduced a lot of my contemporaries to your wonderful songs. Nowhere Man is brilliant.

    1. Thanks, Robert! Age is just a number and we’re glad you’re still feeling young at heart, that’s what counts 🙂 Thanks for spreading our music!

  20. Happy birthday, Mona! Happy birthday, Lisa! (and yes, I DO know which is which, ha ha!). I love your music, and I love both of you! Ich wunsche euch beiden einen wundervollen, fantastischen, ausgezeichneten Tag!!!!

  21. Liebe Mona, liebe Lisa,

kaum ein Tag so schön wie dieser.

    Möge auch die Zeit verrinnen,

so ist es doch des Menschen Wahl:

    Andrer Leute Herz gewinnen,

    das gelingt Euch alle Mal!

    Gitarren schwingen, Beats erklingen,

    tief im Höhlen-Klub.

    Wär’ ich doch dabei gewesen,

    ach ich armer Bub.

Doch zum Trost und meiner Freude

    schau ich dann und wann,

    tief in meine Röhre,

    wenn immer ich das kann.

Schöne Bilder, wilde Rhythmen, alles so adrett.

Danke Euch für schöne Stunden und auch dem Internet.

    Immer froh und meistens heiter,

bitte macht noch lang’ so weiter

    Alles Liebe zum Geburtstag

    Jürgen

  22. Hello Mona and Lisa.May I take this opportunity to wish you both a wonderful 27th birthday and I sincerely hope that you have a wonderful day and are spoilt rotten. I would also like to wish you all the best for the year ahead and hope that you both, (and Rudi and Michaela too) keep safe and well. I hope that when the social climate improves and maybe gets back to something like normal, you will both come into the studio at Radio Broadgreen once again and be guests on my radio show, where you will be more than welcome, as it will again be a privilege and a pleasure have you entertaining both the patients in the hospital and all of the listeners who listen online to the show.
    Kindesr regards always.

    Graham Howard

    1. Hi Graham, lovely to hear from you and thanks for the birthday wishes. We send back all the best and hope you and everyone at Radio Broadgreen has been keeping well!

  23. It’s not fair! You two have too many talents, not leaving any for the rest of us. ???? Love the graphic change of pace!

  24. Love the video and your sound. Have thank my Chicago friend Jay Goeppner for recommending I take a listen to you. Happy Birthday ladies!!

  25. Happy Birthday, I think your a great duo, I say that in my seventy one years I have some many of the great bands and singers including Beatles, Stones, Joe Cocker, And so many more, I believe it is some two hundred. Enjoy your birthday.. I wish I was young again and you come down south sometime I will book a ticket.

  26. Dear Mona and Lisa
    Happy Birthday!
All the best and an ongoing great success!
Thanks for the beautiful interpretation and original songs.
    My best regards
    Marcio Arroyo

  27. Oh! And “Happy birthday to you!” Wow, another trip around the sun. Twin satellites. I can’t even imagine what that’s like. It’s great to have someone that likes you more than anybody else. And to know you’ll always have someone? So special. Again, happy birthday girls. Look out for each other, b

  28. HI Mona & Lisa, this song rocks, great lyrics and great guitar licks……keep those songs coming. Please tour the U.S. Doug in Virginia

    1. Thanks a lot! We’re writing and recording lots of original material right now and will be sharing some outside the MLT Club in just a few weeks! We won’t be touring the States anytime soon, unfortunately, but send all the best across the pond! 🙂

  29. Hi Lisa and Mona, Happy Birthday! There used to be only ONE group that made me smile EVERYTIME I saw them, now there are two, the Beatles and now YOU ladies! I’ve watched for many years every chance I get to see the Beatles again, they bring such happy memories. Now y’all bring a smile for the present and future. Thank you both for being so great at what you do! I wish you all the success you can dream of. And please keep doing it, someday people will look back at you and feel similar to how we feel about the Fab Four! And I hate to do it but I’m gonna say what everyone else says about you… you are both sooo beautiful!

  30. (Not very) fun fact – Bulgaria has a representative in the “27 Club” too. Bulgarian poet and musician Dimitar Voev died at 27, in 1992, when he was the leader, vocalist and bass player of Bulgarian new wave band “Nova Generatsia” (translates as New Generation). He also wrote the lyrics of at least one very famous song, with cult status, for another band…
Happy Birthday again, ladies 🙂 (I already wished you Happy Birthday in a Facebook post too)

    1. Hi Itso, thanks for the wishes! It’s always a loss for the world if inspiring artists pass away, but the young ones are especially tragic. We’re sorry to hear about Dimitar. All the best to you!

  31. You say it’s your birthday…. Have a splendid day ladies and keep on a-rockin’. Have you considered making available a DVD of your Cavern Club performances? They were so marvelous, and while the music itself is terrific to listen to, seeing you also perform the songs with your high energy and great vibes makes it all the better.

    1. Thanks Bruce! We won’t be releasing the performance on DVD for several reasons (expensive royalties acquisition, DVD being a slowly dying medium, …) but we are uploading the full show over at the MLT Club with a new video being added every other week. So far we’ve uploaded 21 of the 28 clips. Maybe you’re interested in checking it out 🙂

  32. I’ve heard more than a few songs about musicians that have died, but this is certainly the most upbeat one I’ve heard. As such, it’s probably the most appropriate (like when Prince died and everyone and their uncle insisted on singing Purple Rain. It wasn’t until Bruno Mars finally got it right and sang Let’s Go Crazy).

Happy birthday, girls! And thanks for the gift. 🙂

  33. My very best wishes for you both!!
As an old crack, who played Janis Joplin for many many years (and still does!), let me just give you an advice, since I wish to listen to your excellent music for many years in the future as well:
Do not take part in the current worldwide experiment: For women at your age, well trained physically and mentally, the risks are by far higher than risks of being infected. Infection at low level is useful in order to optimize t-cell immunity.
I’d be happy to once hear you live in Europe, at whatever place where enough individuals have learnt in time what was going on …

  34. A very very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to both of you. May the coming year bring you good health, much joy and happiness and may your music continue to inspire people all around the World. God bless you both !

  35. Happy Birthday to both of you!!!! I hope you two are enjoying the day and you feel just a little older but a lot wiser. The past year has been a challenge but you have prevailed!! Thank you for all you do for all the members of the MLT Club!

  36. Happy Birthday Mona and Lisa,

Thank you for your incredible talent and the daunting work you put in to make your music better and better.

Thank you for your sincerity and professionalism when addressing your MLT Club Members.

Thank you for your inspiration for some of us to “strike up that old garage band.”

As always, “Thanks for the Memories.”

A fitting Birthday tribute from Sir Paul to you magnificent ladies?

  37. As Jung alluded to, a true throwback, classic ROCK song! If only more people nowadays appreciated great music the way we clubbers do! That’s the only plausible reason I can come up with you’re not already worldwide mega-superstars! Watered-down taste in music is truly a curse. Keep doing what you’re doing, ladies, and eventually more of the younger generations may just catch on and find out what they’re missing! You’ve definitely got the undying admiration and affection of a pretty strong fan base here in the club and beyond! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MONA and LISA!

  38. Happy Birthday ???????????? too you Both

  42. Happy Birthday Mona and Lisa!!!

Mona and Lisa, you can rock and roll on stage with the best of them, and you can write rock songs to match. Song writing of the legends. This is Hendricks, Floyd, Zeppelin territory, and wow those howling guitar licks are incredible Lisa, and Mona awesome lead vocals, you are both the Rock Queens of these times.

People, we need to bring Rock and Roll back and inject it into the Billboard and Amazon and Google Download site charts and displace the techno whiz pop music people are forced to listen to these days. As Angus and Malcolm sang, Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution, rock and roll is here to stay!

Kudos Mona and Lisa, this is some of the best new music in a long time. Rescue us from the direction rock/pop music is going today!

  43. Yet another fantastic number with everything we have come to expect, musicianship, rhythm and clever lyrics with great vocals. Keep it up .
