If I Needed Someone ft. Mike Massé – New Video

This is long overdue …

Five years ago, our musician friend Mike Massé stopped by in Liverpool for his UK tour. We played a few songs together at the Epstein Theatre … remember our rendition of Africa?

Our favourite part about his visit was that we also got to film a music video together for the Beatles classic “If I Needed Someone.”

We were excited to share it on YouTube, but … turns out we did too good of a job, and the algorithm mistook us for the Fab Four themselves! 😄

YouTube banned the video straight away, thinking we uploaded the original Beatles version. Unfortunately, there was no good way to appeal the issue, so we ended up only posting the video to Facebook at the time.

Just out of curiosity, we tried uploading the video again today. Lo and behold, it went through! It is still wrongly identified as the original Beatles song, meaning no ad revenue for us, but at least it did not get taken down this time!

So now, 5 years later, please enjoy our version of “If I Needed Someone” 🙂

While you’re at it, check out Mike’s YouTube Channel and Website for more amazing tunes!

  1. So let me get this straight – Mona does George on 12 string Ricky, Ringo on drums and tambourine, and I believe she is doing Paul’s highest harmony – Lisa is doing Paul’s bass, making it look effortless, and John’s harmony; just amazingly talented and beautiful.

I know this is heresy but I’d rather watch Mona play drums than watch Ringo. Ringo is the GOAT drummer, but I could watch Mona all day.
Perfect rhythm and stunningly beautiful, where Ringo was the cute one…

    1. If I may be so bold;Ringo WAS the GOAT drummer, and seriously underrated by loads of people who should know better. I say was, because now there’s Mona. She has such a deft touch and her technical ability is matched by her feel for the music.

      1. Good morning Frank, Keith, and anyone else feeling a little embarrassed about the GOAT drummer. I was only on my first cup this morning and kept repeating “What is a GOAT drummer?” After a couple of searches, I was humbled (humiliated) to say,”I am such an idiot. Who knew they make drum heads from goat hides?” Some searches should be left alone.

      2. A GOAT drummer. Hard to pick just one, because of the many genres. Ringo gets a lot of stick (see what I did there?), but a lot of his grooves turn out to be unplayable for a lot of drummers. Clearly, Mona has no trouble at all, and seems to be able to effortlessly jump from jazz to rock to folk to sixties beat to psychedelia. And now to the real reason for this reply, Johnnypee Parker: 😆😆😆😆😆😆
        Brilliant!

  2. This is changing the subject… Mona and Lisa’s YouTube version of Day Tripper they have a very talented young lady, playing the tambourine at the Cavern Club! But the version Siri plays…. I swear the tambourine part is being played with the symbols. They are both live. Maybe you musical experts can straighten me out on that? 🤔🤓

  3. Hi Everyone, I can see why they thought it was the original, the harmonies are right on, beautiful, Mike Massee has some lungs as Mona and Lisa.

    Stay Groovy!!!!

  4. Beautiful harmonies.

I’m looking forward to Because sung in harmony with Rudi ……. please, please, please 🙂

  5. I caught this on FB or IG (forget which) and it is really outstanding! The vocal harmonies are out of this world.
While it’s sometimes a necessary evil for protection reasons, it’s sad that certain videos get removed from play and people’s viewing enjoyment. Censorship can be both good and bad in that way. Thankfully we got to view this gem without that problem!
And yes, I do remember that rendition of “Africa”! TOTO was a real favorite of mine in the 70’s and 80’s. Pretty great idea from a couple session players to form what became a hugely popular band during their run of some 40m albums sold and big time charted hits.

  6. Will you be joining Mike on stage during his April UK tour? Would be rather special to hear this live with the three of you.

  7. I can see why the cover was flagged… it’s so spot on! Except the quality of the recording and mix IMHO is somewhat better. Maybe AI has improved enough in the last five years to be able to tell the difference. Perhaps it also looks at the video?

  8. Wow ! What a splendid cover of this song ! It is actually one of the best George Harrison song covers I ever heard. The three-part harmony with Mike Massé is really superb.

  10. I have always felt that your cover of this with Mike was the best vocal harmony on the planet. Thank goodness it finally got onto YouTube where more people can appreciate it. You are the best!

  11. Wonderful rendition of this very special song from the Fab Four. Your musicianship is spot on, as usual. Also, I did check out Mike M’s website, and what a fine voice he has! And, like yourselves, produces really fine duo versions of classic songs.

  12. 5 years is a long time for an algorithm to improve. You were wise to try it again. Part of me thinks there must be a way to tell them they still have a bug though, since they don’t realize it’s you.

But it may not be all bad. I originally found you a couple years ago by looking for the Beatles version of Drive My Car. The algorithm also suggested your version of it.

Today I searched for “If I Needed Someone”, and it listed the Beatles right before it listed you. So hopefully other people will be lucky enough to discover you the same way I did.

This is a wonderful version, I remember seeing it in the Club before, and I’ve always liked this song. But I like it the most when you do it.

Mike Masse has come to my hometown for at least the last couple of years. I’m still hoping to see you play live some day too. I know I would enjoy that.

Thanks, and I hope you had a happy Easter.

  13. No wonder the algorithm was confused. Mikes’s voice, at least on this song is very similar to George’s. And Lisa’s Rickenbaker is spot on. I don’t think I’m telling tales out of class, but somewhere in either the MLT’s archives or Mr. Masse’s, there are more video’s besides If I Needed Someone, and Africa, from this gig, perhaps as many as 5 in total featuring Mona and Lisa. I read/heard that quite a few years ago. At any rate the Epstein Theatre would be my choice (besides The Cavern), for a MonaLisa Twins concert. Of course it has its own website, so you can read about its history and restoration, and see what a classy room it is.

    1. Good Grief! I just looked up the Epstein Theatre subsequent to what I wrote above, only to find that it closed last year at the end of June, due to financial problems. Subsidies, or lack thereof to keep it going. Aaargh! You can now read its sad obituary.

  14. are there any other video’s of you and mike on stage together. he has a great voice and the three of you make it something special.

      1. thank you. i have seen this before, many times. i was just hoping that there was more besides this one. again thanks.

  15. It’s hard to add anything that hasn’t already been said. Just another great piece of work by MLT and fantastic job by Mike Masse. I did subscribe to Mike’s channel. He is a fine artist and plays a great variety of songs. I like his acoustic Rush covers. Happy Easter and thanks again for a great song and video.

  16. The MLT+1 version of Africa is one of my favorite videos, and the best cover of the song anywhere. This new video proves that MonaLisa&Mike make a terrific trio. I hope you and he get together again someday.

  17. I always loved cover of this song, it is amazing!!! You bring out the beauty of it so wonderfully, your harmonies are to die for, magic, and love Mona’s twangy rickenbacker driving everything. What a brilliant collaboration with Mike Masse! Absolutely love it, instantly made this a favourite for me on the Beatles legendary Rubber Soul album.

  18. This is tremendous! How I love that song. Has to be my favorite Beatles cover of them all gals! Congratulations on getting it back on and thanks for sharing it.

  19. FABulous cover. Just hearing the opening Rickenbacker 12string hit me like, this is gonna be good.
The lead vocals could easily be mistaken for George. Flawless harmonies. Good job

  20. The Wagner family…. Keep digging…. There’s probably some more videos that you forgot about that we would love to see and hear!?!?🤓

  21. WOW!!! That was just terrific. I LOVED the energy, incredible harmonies and brightness in the overall production. Thanks so much for sharing this with us!!!

  22. Great video, great music! It looks like Mona replaced Ringo…. And George…. And she played the tambourine…..! My goodness!!
    And she also looked fab…..ulous!!
Happy Easter to the Wagner family and everyone at the MLT Club! 🤓

  23. Mona & Lisa,

I did hear this before on your MLT site, & marveled at the great job you did! Mike is definitely very good; good enough to record with YOU two! (He IS outstanding, btw!) That intro with Mona’s lead guitar and drums & Lisa’s bass playing does sound remarkably like the Beatles, so you learned your parts to perfection!

Mike’s voice does sound very much like George’s lead vocal, but you can tell that it’s not George. It comes down to voice quality, tone & phrasing. It’s just about impossible to exactly copy another human voice. I KNOW, because I try all the time to copy different voices! But it’s fun to try & be somewhat successful.

Same with the background vocals, but you’re SO CLOSE to John & Paul that I had to go back & listen again. Fantastic vocal work on this!

Excellent job again Ladies, (5 years ago!) Everything you do is first rate and classy, lassies! Your video being taken down at first by an algorithm proves that machines are not as good as real people in detecting minor differences in sound quality. But I love your version of this very cool Beatles song!

Thanks for putting this out to the World, & great job Mike, wherever you are today!

    — Bud

  24. Sounds very good. I’m not a big fan of that original song by the Beatles – but you made it sound good. I remember the video of you with Mike doing Africa. And last night I was watching many of your videos on YouTube and I saw a few live performances that I never saw before, including Money (that’s what I want) also with Mike. This was a nice Sunday surprise. Thanks Mona & Lisa.
    Bobby S. 😎❤️🎵❤️🎵🧛‍♂️

  25. Hhhmmmm…so the people at YouTube had mistaken you for the Fab Four…so they are apparently blind people running YouTube that they couldn’t recognize 2 girls and a guy and not 4 men….hhhhmmmm with the state of things in the world these past few years why am I not surprised….the video is fabulous and the real Fab Four should be proud that people like the MonaLisa Twins and Mike Masse exist to continue the Fab Four Legacy….Well Done and I Thank You for doing what you do❤️🧡

  26. Fantastic Job!!!! had no idea there were 3 extra Beatles!! hahaha!!! Great job again !! Thank You!!!

  27. Absolutely LOVE that! What a terrific cover of one of my favorite Beatles tunes. And I love the way you girls do your videos, you both seem to get more joy out doing music than anyone I’ve ever seen, it is great to see that much happiness. Thanks for the video, and the story behind it, glad it finally got posted!

    1. I absolutely agree with you… the videos these girls and Papa Rudi produce are magnificent and a fraction of the cost and time in making video than what some major record label would do.

    1. This is another one of your great songs and it gave me the chills! Thank You ALL! … JUST LOVE IT! From, Gary

  28. Have loved this cover since I first heard it.I had the pleasure of seeing Mike perform in NYC.When I told him this video was how I found him,he just smiled and confirmed what we all know, that you ladies are the Real Deal, and just as charming and amazing as we in the MLT Club knew all along.

    Happy Easter Mona,Lisa,Papa Rudi,and Michaela!!🐰💛💓🐰

    Love & Hugs
    Tom

    1. You must be new to the MonaLisa Twins , Jack…this live performance with Mike Masse was the last live performance the girls have done..this performance with Mike Masse was at the Brian Epstein Theatre in Liverpool in 2019…check out the video by the girls and Mike ..AFRICA a Toto cover….it would be nice if they put the band back together…I’d take a trip to see them wherever their playing…keep your fingers crossed 🤞 we can always hope.

  29. Awesome rendition of the original song! Beautiful song and video. All of you continue to make me happy to see and hear you. Happy Easter to all of you.
    Tom Knedler

    1. Kind of makes one day, now and then!!
Love the music and what you all are doing! Happy Easter!

  30. This is really fantastic. Mike’s voice is perfect for George part. Mona, you ace the 12 String Rickenbacker part that George made famous. And Lisa, your bass line kicks, I am sure Paul would agree. Naturally, the harmonies were exceptional .

  31. Loved seeing this on YouTube! At the risk of offending many, I honestly find several of your covers, maybe even the vast majority of them, more enjoyable than the originals. Beatles and others.

    1. This speaks volumes as to your talent, of course, but I may be slightly influenced by getting to know the awesome people behind your music because of club membership and correspondence! HAPPY EASTER! GOD bless you all!

  32. Absolutely delightful, girls. Some really lovely harmonising with Mike in there. Are there any more songs with the 3 of you in the pipeline?

BTW, did you know (I presume you did, but in case not!) that the Hollies did a cover of this which charted in the UK:

    1. Check out the video of the MonaLisa Twins AFRICA..a Toto cover which features Mike Masse in a concert at the Brian Epstein Theatre in Liverpool in 2019.

  33. I really loved Africa with you both and Mike if i need someone very catchy and also enjoyable number you work well together enjoyed the video also thank you both and happy Easter save some eggs for later!!! don’t eat them all at once 🙂
